Honing Machine
The honing head consists of a linear bearing slide with a vertical adjustment of 17 inches and a hydraulic drive motor that will accept any honing tooling.
The electrical package incorporates the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC), step down transformer, relays, motor starter and push buttons into a functional and conveniently located enclosure.
Our cylinder honing equipment is designed with the hydraulic rebuilding shop in mind.
Its design ensures that the hone is ergonomically friendly and environmentally safe.
We manufacture hones capable of honing bores from 2.5” (63.5mm) to 21.2” (538mm).
- MSD-H-20 has an overall length of 20’ (6.1m) with a stroke length of 8.5’ (2.59m)
- MSD-H-30 has an overall length of 30’ (9.14m) with a stroke length of 13.5’ (4.12m)
- MSD-H-40 has an overall length of 40’ (12.19m) with a stroke length of 18.5’ (5.63m)
- MSD-H-50 has an overall length of 50’ (15.24m) with a stroke length of 23.5’ (7.16m)
Drive Unit
- The horizontal carriage, composed of four (4) Teflon-lined linear bearings (A) running on two (2) 1½” turned ground and polished rails.
- A rack and gear system (B), driven by a hydraulic motor, runs the length of the drive section. This ensures a rugged, no lash, horizontal drive.
- A base plate on which the hydraulic drive, honing motor, and electrical controls are mounted.
- Cable guard and hoses with an Igus track guide.

Cylinder Section Frame
The cylinder section frame incorporates a full-length drain pan as part of the structure. The drain pan will capture the honing oil, carry it to the honing oil reservoir, and use a slurry settling system to remove the honing sediment.
Leveling leg bases every five feet provide a method of mounting and leveling the cylinder section. Side panels are bolted for easy access where necessary.
Honing Oil Pump System
The high-volume honing oil pump system ensures a continuous flow of oil for cutting and flushing. A pipe manifold runs the length of the cylinder section, with oil nozzles mounted on short flex hoses every three feet, pumps the honing oil into the cylinder tube. A settling system removes slurry from the honing oil as it returns to the main tank.
Two rolling shrouds are provided to contain the honing oils and ensure a clean, splash-free honing system. These hoods roll the length of the hone and/or can be lifted off to facilitate the installation and removal of the cylinder.
Auto-Tensioner
The MSD hone includes electronic tensioning. A variable voltage clutch mechanism can eliminate the need to manually adjust stone tension. This system adapts to standard “Sunnen” honing tooling.
Chain Vise and Support Vee
Both the rigid brand chain vise and high density nylon support Vee are included.
Chain Vise
- MSD-H-Ridgid, 8” diameter
- MSD-H-Reed 12” diameter

Portable Hand Hone | MSD-H-PHH
Hand honing can be a practical and economic alternative to machine honing. We have developed a portable honing system that will insure proper honing oil flow, filtration and containment.
A continuous oil flow removes the spent abrasive and material. If this material collects it causes excessive stone wear and stone glazing. A good finish can only be attained with clean oil and the lubricity the oil supplies.
Hand-honing can be a practical and economic alternative to machine honing. Machinery Service & Design has developed a portable honing system that will ensure proper honing oil flow, filtration, and containment.
Our Portable Hand Hone was designed for honing cylinders with bores from 2.5” (63.5mm) to 12.2” (310mm) and up to 10’ (3.1m) in length. It is capable of honing larger diameter bores.
The most important factor in getting a good finish along with material removal during the hand honing process is the flushing, lubrication and cooling supplied by the honing oil. A continuous oil flow removes the spent abrasive and material. If this material collects it causes excessive stone wear and stone glazing. This will affect material removal. A good finish can only be attained with clean oil and the lubricity the oil supplies.
Portable Hand Hone Features
- (A) Hone rolls on four casters and will center on a cylinder using our disassembly table.
- (B) A liftable shield controls honing oil splash.
- (C) A flexible magnetic base holds the feed hose on the rear port of the cylinder.
- (D) The used oil runs through a filter paper before returning to the tank. A plastic mesh under the paper ensures good flow return. The mesh covers a magnetic sheet material that will collect any fine ferrous material. This 3-part filter system ensures clean oil being pumped during the honing process.
Portable Hand Hone Drive | MSD-H-PHHD
The MSD-H-PHHD hand hone drive is used to drive Sunnen honing tooling for the cleanup or resizing of hydraulic cylinder tubes. The pneumatic drive motor, Sunnen ANR-110 mandrel adapter and hand-brake adjustment are integrated into a simple and ergonomic package. The lightweight and well balanced tool will allow the operator to remove metal from the tubes without the stress of handling a large heavy and awkward electric drill.
Drive Features
- (A) Sunnen ANR-110 stone tension adapter
- (B) Stone Tension hand brake
- (C) Air on/off valve control
- (D) Air Inlet with swivel
Chain Vise
A chain vise can be supplied as an option to secure your tube for honing. Choose from:
- MSD-H-Ridgid, 8” diameter
- MSD-H-Reed 12” diameter
Diamond Stones for our Hone | MSD-H-S-36, 80, 180, 270, 400 Grit
MS&D can significantly increase your honing production with the use of Borazon stones. Borazon is a General Electric synthetic diamond bonded into a metallic matrix that we then bound into our holders. We manufacture a set of stones that fit into Sunnen ARN master holders. Borazon outlasts aluminum oxide stone by more than 100 times. Stone Options:
- Heavy: MSD-H-S-36
- Heavy: MSD-H-S-80
- Medium: MSD-H-S-180
- Smooth: MSD-H-S-270
- Polish: MSD-H-S-400
All stone sets are sold in sets of 4. With a 4-stone configuration you can cut your honing time in half and eliminate frequent stone changes.
MSD-H-V: The Non-marring “V”
MSD-H-V: The non-marring “V” can be used to support one end of the tube being honed. The “V” can be easily secured at any point along the length of the tube end of our hone.
MSD-H-M Quick Release Return Oil Separator
This fixture sets in the honing oil tank. The returning oil runs under the fixture and the magnet pulls the ferrous material out of the oil.
(Simple pull of the release handle releases the ferrous material for disposal.)
Remote Jog Pedant | MSD-H-R
An optional remote cable control is available to allow the operator to control the jog buttons while moving the magnetic stops on either end of the cylinder section. This will facilitate setup, especially on long cylinders.
